Document Merging - Bookmark not defined / Not a valid filename

Modified on Tue, 20 Feb at 8:48 PM

Problem

After merging a document in LawMaster, one of the following annotations is shown the the document rather than the expected content or letterhead image:

  • Error! Bookmark not defined
  • Error! Not a valid filename

Solution

This will occur when your document template is attempting to import content from another document when:

  • The document no longer exists or is inaccessible at the time you merged the document (Error! Not a valid filename);
    OR
  • The document does not have the expected bookmarked items

The reasons this may occur are varied and depend upon your specific configuration.

If this only happens when you are working away from the office, or working on a different computer, the imported document may not be accessible from that location. You should check with your IT systems support to make sure you have access to the usual resources.

You may be able to determine the location of the required document by:

  1. Finding the document template in the LawMaster templates tree;
  2. Right click and select to Open (Read Only);
  3. Locate the point in the document where you are seeing the issue;
  4. Press Alt + F9 to reveal field codes;
  5. If you see something like the following, you can see where the file is expected to be located (O:\tmp\imported.docx). If there is something after the filename, this is the bookmark (LetterTop in the example) within the file:

    Should you see something more complex with mergefields and other codes, further review will be required.

    Check with the person at your firm responsible for managing precedents, or lodge a support request with us.

    NOTE: The file location may also be a web resource

  6. For Error! Not a valid filename:
    1. Check that you are able to navigate to the noted document location in Windows File Explorer, and if you can't, speak with your IT systems support.
  7. For Error! Bookmark not defined:
    1. The document referred to exists and is accessible, but a bookmark to the desired content may need to be added.
    2. If you are responsible for managing precedents at your firm, locate the content that should be added in the import file, highlight it and use the Insert > Bookmark process in Word to add the bookmark, then save and close the document.

NOTE: If you are not the firm's precedent manager, you should not change these documents. Refer to them for assistance.
