Step-by-step guide

To setup SMS within LawMaster the user needs to follow a number of steps:

  1. Setup an account with a 3 Party SMS Gateway provider. Some providers that you can use include:
    1. www.smsglobal.com.au (you can setup a test account with this company to trial the service)
    2. www.smsdirect.com.au
    3. ww.redoxygen.com.au
    4. www.message-media.com.au
    5. www.utbox.net
    6. www.messagenet.com.au
    7. www.directsms.com.au
  2. Set-up the correct parameter for your provider in LawMaster using the 00-SMS Parameter. You need to have the URL of the SMS gateway from your provider to do this:
    1. Go to Parameters > Set Parameters > Miscellaneous > Maintain type '00' parameters directly
    2. Select the SMS parameter
    3. Right click and modify
    4. Fill out the form:

    5. Mandatory fields are:
      1. Date: the date you setup the service
      2. Description: Descriptor of the 00 parameter (SMS email suffix)
      3. Parent: @ followed by the URL supplied by SMS Global eg) @email.smsglobal.com
      4. Flag = Y
      5. Visible? = Ticked
    6. Optional but recommended:
      1. Value 2: The maximum length of the SMS eg) 160

NOTE:A value of 0 = no character limit.
If a character limit is set the user is warned if the message they are trying to send exceeds the message limit. The user has the option of ignoring the warning and sending the message or returning to amend or cancel the message. For a change to the Max length to take effect close and reopen LawMaster and Outlook.
  3. Modify or add an entity which has at least one mobile phone number and in the Preferred SMS field indicate the preferred mobile phone number to be used to receive an SMS.
  4. To send an SMS right click on an entity and select SMS
  5. An Outlook email window should open looking something like this where you can enter the message you want to send into the body of the email and then click Send

SMSs technically have a max length of 160 characters.

Any SMS sent with more than 160 characters gets broken up and send as one or more SMSs. The receiving handset then recombines the SMS into one as long as the handset has that capability (which most modern handsets do). The main issue is cost. You will likely be charged from your SMS gateway provider per 160 characters. Here is a more detailed explanation of where the 160 character limit came from: https://thehub.smsglobal.com/why-is-an-sms-160-characters.

LawMaster provides the ability to send an SMS via a third party SMS Gateway provider. When an SMS is initiated from within LawMaster an email is sent to the SMS Gateway Provider with the phone number and message details to be sent to the recipient. LawMaster has no control over the number from which the SMS is sent, this is determined by the Messaging Provider. It's possible that some Messaging Providers may have the ability to setup a dedicated number that only belongs to your account from which text messages are sent eg SMS Global Dedicate d Number | Virtual Phone Number | Receive and Send SMS Online (smsglobal.com). You will need to contact your current Messaging Provider to ascertain whether they offer that service.
