Tips on Word Numbering During LawMaster Merges

Modified on Thu, 14 Mar at 2:47 AM

Following are the recommended tips to be used for numbering in MS Word while merging a document in LawMaster.

  1. Always select Ctrl + Shift + N to reset Normal settings in your document before proceeding.
  2. Ensure you have your paragraph markers turned on e.g. ¶.
  3. For numbering use the LISTNUM field in Word. Insert Tab > Quick Parts > Field > Categories > Numbering > Select LISTNUM.
  4. Field Properties > Format > Choose the relevant style e.g. Outline Default.
  5. When you insert the field into your document it will appear as {LISTNUM}. You can then use the decrease or increase indents where applicable.
  6. ALT + F9 will enable you to see that the numbering appears correct. If you wish to change the style of numbering right click the very first LISTNUM and change to the style required.
  7. Set tabs in accordance with how each paragraph is to be formatted and place the hanging indents in the correct places.
  8. When using the LISTNUM field in an IF STATEMENT a paragraph return needs to be inserted directly before the LISTNUM field e. g.
    {IF {MERGEFIELD ChooseDefs_P1}= "Y " "¶
    {LISTNUM OutlineDefault \l 6} "this is the paragraph text.¶ " ""}
    If another IF STATEMENT needs to follow the previous paragraph, you do not need to place a return between the paragraphs as it will be included in the ‘true text’ of the next IF statement.
  9. Where italics or font are a problem after the merge check the original document for formatting styles that contain this formatting. A ll styles should be set on normal.
  10. For numbering – if numbers are bolded incorrectly, choose the LISTNUM, right click and change the formatting as applicable.
